We’ve created “Effective Lighting Score (ELS™)” for one reason; to better describe lighting performance in the off-road space.

While competitors claim their lights project further, the main difference between Baja Designs and the competition is that we prioritize Blend Angle and Blendability over distance. We’ve established 10 lux to be the minimum amount of light needed to safely operate a vehicle. 10 lux is equivalent to the amount of light present at twilight.

Learn about the four key factors of ELS™:
Blend Angle / Blendability Distance / Output

What are Blend Angle and Blendability?

Blend Angle: Blend Angle tells us how wide the light’s beam pattern will be in degrees. The Blend Angle or width of the beam’s pattern is measured to a minimum of 10 lux.

Blendability: Blendability describes how evenly lumens are distributed across the light’s horizontal beam to 180 degrees.

Blendability
0-3 Sharp Cut-Off
4-7
8-10 Smooth Blend
Blend Angle

Blendability Scale:
0-3:  Minimal transitional light.
8-10: Smoothest transitional light; reduced distance.

What is Distance?

Distance

Distance tells us how far the light’s center beam projects in feet, before diminishing to 10 lux*.

10 lux is the standard to which we measure our lights and is equivalent to the amount of light during twilight.

  • *Lux is the luminous flux over a given area.
  • 1 to 0.25 lux is roughly equivalent to the amount of light present on a full moon.

What is light output?

Lumens

Light output is the amount of light that can be seen after passing through the secondary optics, measured in effective lumens. Raw or theoretical lumens are the light emitted by the LEDs with no optics, lenses, and housings present.  We use effective lumens instead of raw lumens to accurately portray how much light output you have to work with.

Light measurements have been measured by an unaffiliated 3rd party laboratory at which Baja Designs then imported those measurements into a simulated behind-the-wheel environment through the 3D-rendering program Keyshot. All lights have been simulated with a pair of lights (except OnX6+ and S8 light bars) and on the same plane to keep comparisons equal. *ELS™ uses effective lumens, which is the amount of light available after it passes through the secondary optics. For more information on this, refer to the ELS™ white paper.
