The All New Squadron 2.0

If you're a Land Cruiser nerd, this BJ70 needs no introduction. If you're not, let us introduce you because the guys at Fit Garage did an incredible job building this Cruiser.This is a 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ70. In the designation, the "B" identifies the engine family, while the "J" designates the Land Cruiser line. It's a 70 Series, introduced in 1984 as the replacement for the 40 Series, a heavy-duty, off-road workhorse. That made it an excellent adventure rig, or just a great truck for farm work. The only problem? We never got them in the U.S., so seeing one on the road is pretty rare. Thankfully, Land Cruiser nerds are importing them from all over the world. This BJ70 ended up at Fit Garage for a major overhaul to turn it into the perfect Land Cruiser shorty. Fit Garage swapped in a Toyota 1HD-FT, a diesel known for its reliability and massive low-end torque, paired with an H55F 5-speed and a transfer case retaining the factory PTO winch, which is still fully functional. And of course what is a Land Cruiser without factory cable differential lockers?Inside, Scheel-Mann Vario F seats sit on the factory suspension seat bases. It has a set of beautiful SSR forged 16x9.5 wheels wrapped in Nitto 35x11.50R16s. But what we are really here for is the Baja Designs lighting package. Call us biased, but we think it is the best part of this Land Cruiser. The factory halogen headlights were completely replaced with Baja Designs DOT LP6 universal headlights, mounted with custom brackets to make them fit. On the bumper sits a set of Baja Designs LP4s, which, honestly, is more than enough light for this Land Cruiser. It isn't a race truck, nor is it a UTV; it's a solid-axle diesel Land Cruiser, so it isn't racing in Baja anytime soon. But that doesn't mean it can't rip up and down the fire roads near Bend, Oregon, where Fit Garage has its shop. On the underside is a set of Baja Designs red rock lights. Why red? They look cool and provide area lighting while doing it, no harm in that. Red rock lights and dome lights are typically used in low-light tactical or off-grid applications, where red preserves your night vision. In this case, it's just awesome. If you haven't noticed by now, this Land Cruiser is left-hand drive, which makes it a bit rarer, since most BJ70s stateside were imported from Japan and sit right-hand drive. Japan's 25-year import rule made it the easiest pipeline, so RHD shorties dominate the U.S. scene. This Cruiser, though, came from Saudi Arabia. So not only does this BJ70 drive from the "correct" side for American roads it started life in one of the best preservation climates a 40-year-old truck could ask for. Fitting, too, that a Cruiser built for desert duty ended up living its second life ripping around the high desert of Central Oregon. This BJ70 is proof that the best builds don't chase trends, bolting random objects all over it to make it “cool”; they honor what the truck was always meant to do. Fit Garage kept the soul intact: the diesel clatter, the cable lockers, the working winch. Shannon Campbell needs no introduction, but if you need one, here it is: three-time King of the Hammers winner. Off-Road Hall of Fame inductee. World-class fabricator behind some of the most capable Ultra4 cars ever built — all through his shop, Coop Racing and Fabrication. And a longtime friend and Baja Designs driver.We linked up with Shannon at Jeep Beach and got to check out his latest Jeep build, and while this one isn't an Ultra4 race car, it's built with the same design ethos. This is his CJ8 Scrambler: a full custom tube chassis  designed around an Aqualu Industries full aluminum CJ8 Scrambler body, complete with half doors and tailgate. This streamlines having to find a donor CJ8 and cut it apart when there were only 27,000 scramblers ever made. It was built for long weekend trail runs like the Rubicon or Sand Hollow— and despite looking like it was just built, it has already run the Rubcion. For overnight runs, a rooftop tent straps to the roof where it becomes part rock crawler, part overlander. Being a CJ8, it has plenty of room for camping gear and even has a fridge in the back. Shannon built something that could run the trail all day and still be comfortable enough to actually enjoy getting there and driving around town. Under the hood sits a GM Performance 6.6L L8P V8 making 525 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque, managed through a Holley Dash ECU putting power down through a Hughes Performance Turbo 400 transmission and a Phenom 3.75 transfer case. LM1 axle housings carry ARB 10" lockers front and rear, wrapped in 40x13.50 Nitto Trail Grappler tires and Vision wheels. On the bumper is a Warn M8274-S built to match the classic aesthetic of the CJ8 Scrambler, and under that are four Squadron Pro Classics in Baja Amber. While this may look like it's built like a race car, Shannon isn't ripping across the desert at 100 mph like his Ultra4 car, so four Squadron Pros making 4,900 lumens per light is more than enough. Besides the amber rock lights running all the way around, an interesting lighting solution on this Jeep is the mounting of the Baja Designs S2 right inside the front fender to illuminate the front wheel area for rock crawling. The chassis has a 120-inch wheelbase, which gives this CJ8 a planted stance, especially on steep hills. Suspension it sits on is ADS with 14" MBR shocks, paired with a double-triangulated 4-link up front and 4-link in the rear. AZ Driveshafts. Boat-side rock sliders protect the sides. This is something you would see in an Ultra4 race car or a rock buggy.Every component choice  here reflects the same thought process that goes into building a race car because that's the only way Shannon knows how to build. Green Lights, Good Times In the world of cookie-cutter builds and going fast in the desert, you have two options: buy a UTV or build a prerunner. One is turnkey ready to go, easy to live with, minimal maintenance, cheap to keep running, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you climb in. Side-by-sides are good at what they do, and they do it really well. But that feeling can be numb. If you want something more visceral, something that's yours from the ground up well, if you're Kevin Callaway, a mechanical engineer by trade, you build a 1993 Dodge D250 Cummins diesel prerunner. And that's exactly what he did. When Kevin first floated the concept to a friend, the response was instant: "That will never work." That was all he needed to hear. The truck was getting beams, a full tube chassis, and a Cummins under the hood. 16 months later, it was done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DJcjMkkkPA Starting From Zero Then Going Further It started as an old work truck he found sitting in Yucca Valley, California. Kevin brought it home, stripped it to a bare cab, 3D scanned everything, and built the entire chassis from the ground up a custom tube chassis front to back, sitting on beams designed by LSK Fabrication. Under the hood is a 2007 Cummins 5.9 making 600 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The suspension makes 20 inches of wheel travel up front and 32 inches in the rear. The whole thing was designed, fabricated, wired, and painted by Kevin in his garage. The only things he didn't do himself were the windshield install, the paint protection film, and the transmission rebuild.  Feeling Lucky Kevin runs two sPOD BantamX units integrated into the truck, controlling all the lighting, fans, and accessories on the D250. Up front, seven LP4 LED light pods with green backlight on the bumper push 61,999 lumens into Lighting Zones 1 through 4, and every one of them is running a green backlight to match the British Racing Green paint. S2 with green lenses serve as turn signals, and green rock lights serve as interior lights.  Out back, an RTL is mounted as a chase light, and a pair of RTL-Ms handle brake lights and turn signals. Because the entire truck is custom wired, Kevin integrated the sPOD input functions directly with the turn signals when the indicator hits on the steering column, the S2 Pros drop to 10% and flash in sync with the RTL-Ms. On a separate switch, he can run the S2s at full power as marker lights when he's off-road.  Kevin painted the truck British Racing Green because it was the right color for what he was building, and it matches the brown PRP racing seats and wood grain oh so perfectly.  At the end of the day, Kevin could have bought a UTV. He could have been out in the desert six months earlier, with a warranty card in the glove box and a dealer number on speed dial. But that's not the point.  Kevin didn't build this truck to go fast. He built it because building it was the whole thing, and the truck just happens to rip.
