Since 2014, Babes in the Dirt has been providing inclusive events for women to experience off-roading through our annual campouts, track days & dual-sport adventures. Their mission is to provide an inclusive experience that explore encourages all new riders to experience Dirt first, where you'll learn from mistakes in a more forgiving environment and have fun doing it. Recently Babes in the Dirt’s Dual Sport Summer 3 took over The Outpost, located in the town of Fawnskin, CA, along the North Shore of Big Bear Lake for an all-inclusive, ladies-only, four day three night weekend dedicated to street-legal dirt bikes. And of course, we were more than proud to help support their mission as Baja Designs was founded on riding moto. This experience included guided & swept dual sport trail rides curated by the incredible WLF Enduro, lakeside hangs, customized merch for the weekend, gift bags with some seriously great moto items from Fox Racing, Giant Loop, Mystic Moto, Bell Helmets, 805 Beer, and more. Breakfast, trail lunch, + dinners around the campfire (including Hibachi!) were included, plus an awards ceremony and night rides lit by Baja Designs kicked it up a notch. Husqvarna Motorcycles hooked up six lucky riders with brand new FE 350S to hit the trails that ranged from novice to advanced, with mileage being roughly 30+ a day on some of the best mountain terrain and single track there is. This 28-person event, though small, packs a powerful dose of excitement and, over a sense of belonging, community, and comradery. When it comes to off-road vehicles, we often find ourselves drooling over massive tires, blinding lights, and monstrous suspension setups, imagining conquering the Baja desert or tackling the toughest trails. However, Andy Sedano took a different path, showcasing that true off-road prowess lies in finding the perfect balance between function and form. His 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback, transformed into a rally-inspired build, is a model of a tailored vehicle that can handle any rally road with style. Rallying Around Inspiration Drawing inspiration from the world of rallying, Andy set out to create a unique off-road experience. The rally theme, synonymous with speed, versatility, and endurance, breathed new life into his Subaru build. With a nod to the 90s rally vibe, the two-tone paint and round bezels give the vehicle an unmistakable personality. Essential Lighting Upgrades   The lighting package included two Squadron-R Pros with clear driving/combo lenses illuminating Lighting Zones 3 and 4 and two Squadron-R Sports with amber wide cornering lenses to light up Lighting Zone 1. The strategically mounted Squadron-R Pros and Sports provided exceptional illumination. Additionally, replacing the factory fog lights with Baja Designs XL-R Sports using the Rally Innovations mounting kit was a game-changer, further increasing visibility while utilizing the factory mounting location for the lights. Efficient Power Management with sPOD™   A well-thought-out off-road build requires a reliable power management system, and Andy's choice of the sPOD™ Source LT Mini 6 was spot-on. With the ability to control six circuits and the option to add more accessories later, this power management system ensures every modification functions optimally, whether it's lighting or additional components like cooling fans or chase lights. Form Meets Function The most significant takeaway from Andy's build is the emphasis on functionality over excess. While it's tempting to go all-out with every upgrade available, Andy focused on customizing his Subaru to meet his specific off-road needs. This approach resulted in a highly efficient and purpose-built rig that can handle most forest roads. Conquering the Trails with Style Andy Sedano's rally-inspired Subaru Impreza Outback build is a testament to the fact that you don't need to overcomplicate things to go out on the trail. He created a vehicle that perfectly blends function and form by combining rally-inspired aesthetics with essential upgrades. Whether cruising the trails or paying homage to the iconic 90s rally scene, this build stands as a shining example of a well-tailored off-road adventure machine. So, the next time you're itching to build an off-road vehicle, take a page from Andy's book - prioritize function, embrace a theme that excites you, and remember that sometimes, simplicity is the key to off-road fun.

The Baja 500 is widely known as the second most grueling off-road race in the world, a race that quickly humbles some of the toughest drivers, and this year was no exception. The 55th SCORE International Baja 500 went down not only as one of the most technical races of the year, totaling 473 grueling miles but acted as the ultimate proving ground for our lights for most of the racers that finished at night. The majority of the course ran through rocky mountain terrain, offering little margin for error. Starting from Ensenada, the route headed eastward towards Ojos Negros. The initial segment of the course meandered amidst the trees, presenting numerous race lines to navigate. Success required exceptional navigation skills, countless split-second decisions, and precise steering. Additionally, the course featured cross ruts, blind inclines, and numerous sudden drops, adding to its complexity, and when the sun dropped after the first trucks finished, most of the racers would race into the night, making light for this race vital. Bryce Menzies charged out front for a first-place overall win as he got around Luke McMillin early on after he experienced a mechanical issue. Though Luke was down 15 positions, he charged back through the pack to finish in the top 5 Trophy Trucks. It was Mike Walser who was chasing Bryce Menzies all day and was driving like he had something to prove, letting it all hang out, running a near-perfect race. In the end, Walser finished second overall, eight minutes behind Bryce, with an overall time of 9:06. Jason McNeil got his second first place finish in Trophy Truck Spec and accomplished a huge feat by finishing third place overall at the Baja 500. Jason started 42 cars behind the first Trophy Truck, which means he raced through heavy dust and many rocks which were kicked up by other big trucks. At the end of the day they were 5th physical vehicle across the finish line, 26 minutes off the lead truck finishing 1st in class and 3rd overall. Class one winner Cody Reid finished 14th overall in the RPI all-wheel-drive buggy, holding a very good race despite getting caught up in bottlenecks with the spec trucks. Francisco Vera got first place in class 10 followed by Bruce Yee and Manlio Diaz finished just as the sun set. In Pro UTV, Wayne Matlock was holding first place, battling it out with the factory Polaris team the first half of the race until he encountered some mechanical issues that made him lose time. In the end Wayne was able to finish 5th overall while his wife, Kristen Matlock, took her Polaris RZR Pro R to a third UTV overall finish. Phil Blurton took first place in Pro UTV Turbo, followed by Matt Burroughs in 3rd. In PRO UTV Naturally Aspirated, it was Zach Sizelove who clenched first place for a second year in a row for the Honda UTV team, followed by Lawrence Janesky in second, and Joe Bolton, who rounded out the podium. Baja Designs CEO Trent Kirby racing with Douglas Cornwell, finished 5th in Pro Stock UTV while encountering CV axle issues midway through the race while it was a long, hard-fought battle. In the end, Sara Price would finish first place in her factory Can-Am, followed by Endy Chavez in Second place. Class 1/2 1600 is one of the oldest classes racing in Baja that first took shape racing in the early 1980s, and it was Pablo Jauregui who was the fastest through the 500 miles, followed by Eric Pavolka and Roman Pereyra. The Honda Ridgeline has continued to be a dominant force in Baja for nearly a decade and has continued to show its dominance in class 7, with Ethan Ebert at the wheel taking first place by over seven hours. Class 11 has continued to be the people's favorite as it is the most grassroots form of off-road racing you can get; it is nothing more than a stock Volkswagen with safety components to go racing. Oliver Flemate and his team battled his way to first place for a total of 15 hours in his Class 11. There is no Baja without motos, as our company was founded on the backbone of racing motorcycles in Mexico. When we saw the 11x bike of Atruro Salas cross the finish line, we were so thrilled we were over the moon. But seeing Connor Eddy finishing second, followed by the 3X bike of Ciaran Naran finishing third was equally exciting. It's one thing to win the race on four wheels but to finish on two wheels it is a battle against man, machine, and Baja. Following that, it was Brandon Wright who finished first in Pro Moto Ironman, finishing the Baja 500 in 12 hours and 30 minutes, a whole 20 minutes faster than Jason Salosi, followed by Edgar Cota. SCORE Pro Quads Champion Nicolas Velez took first place, followed by Fransisco Valle. Even in the Sportsman Quad class our own Baja Designs, employee Eva Hernandez took 6th place finishing the race which can be considered an accomplishment in itself. The 55th edition of the Baja 500 will be remembered as the most demanding and technically challenging race thus far, and we are thrilled to provide a product that has gained the trust of over 80% of racers. We take immense pride in the achievements of our racers this year. Over the past three decades, Baja Designs has dedicated itself to testing our lights in the harsh Baja terrain through firsthand driving experiences. Just a few weeks ago, we were in Flagstaff, Arizona, for the Overland Expo West with thousands of attendees and Overlanders. We had such a good time we made it out to the event to see friends, vendors, and other businesses who have made incredible products in an industry that is so near and dear to our hearts. To top it all off, the event was surrounded by the great wilderness in the mountains of Northern Arizona. We saw many incredible Overland rigs, but here is a list of our favorite rigs at the 2023 Overland Expo West.  When you look at Overland vehicles, it is normal for them to be heavy and overloaded with gear, but what if they didn't have to be? What if they were minimalistic, lightweight, capable, and fast? What if they were part prerunner and part Overlander... maybe they are a prelander. Enter Jason Denny's Ford F150 Raptor, the prime example of what a great overland vehicle should be. Complete with a Go Fast Camper, Rigd bike rack, and plenty of storage for an ice chest and some sleeping bags. Jason's Raptor is light, nimble, and capable of some serious speeds, and with speed is the need for a light with serious distance. The Raptor has the 2020 F150 Raptor Baja Designs Fog kit complete with the Next Generation SAE, S2s, and Squadron Pros. Behind the bumper is a Baja Designs 10" Hybrid Laser Onx6 Plus , which is capable of throwing light 350% further than a traditional OnX6 light bar due in part to the two laser chips and Next Generation LED paired with our high-speed Spot optic to deliver a far-reaching yet smooth blend of light.. The Acela Monterra Camper is a robust truck that captured our attention at the Overland Expo West. Weighing nearly 20,000 pounds, this heavyweight vehicle is designed for challenging expeditions across the globe. It features Baja Designs LP9 lights and an array of Baja Designs Squadron Scene lights around the vehicle.  The Acela Monterra is built to conquer tough terrains and enable adventurous explorers to create lasting memories as they gear up to start their global journey in the next year through Europe. Inside the truck, the sPOD BantamX power control module and touch panel allow for easy management of interior and exterior accessories, including scene lighting and other accessories. The custom Overlander Global, 16ft habitation box, offers a practical living space for extended journeys for Tiffany and her husband, Kurtis.  Now, we sought a build that hit every Lighting Zone, and that was none other than our friend Chris from Pure 4x4. His 2020 Toyota Tacoma features a wide array of lights, everything from the classic Baja Designs Squadron Toyota Tacoma Fog Pocket Kit to Onx6 Light bars in the grill and even S2 Sport scene lighting. This truck hits all the Lighting Zones, everything from Zone 1 Dust and fog through Zone 8 Spot.  One of our favorites of the show was the TAV Spec built 2017 Toyota Tundra, complete with a Total Chaos long travel kit, Bowen Customs custom bed, Sherpa roof rack, and the Skinny Guys Camper on the back. When we say this camper has everything and the kitchen sink on it, it truly does; there is even a cassette toilet in it. There is nothing better than pooping in peace instead of behind a bush.  TAV really knocked it out of the park on this Tundra; for lighting, it really is the ultimate setup, complete with Baja Designs LP9s, LP6s, Squadrons and flush-mounted S1s on the bumper for cornering. Controlling all the lights is the BantamX HD Panel mounted in the cab. Skinny Guy Campers utilizes the wireless functions of the Bluetooth Bantam App to control all the lights from inside the camper if they need to. Overall this Tundra is one of the nicest second-generation Tundras that TAV has ever built.  The 2023 Overland Expo West not only showcased these exceptional rigs but also served as a platform for like-minded individuals to connect, share stories, and celebrate their shared love for the great outdoors. It was an event that left a lasting impression and further fueled the passion for Overlanding among attendees.

So, you have bought some lights, and now you're wondering if you need a switch power distribution system to make your life easier. How do you know which system to get, and why would you want it over the provided wiring harness and relays? It all boils down to simplicity and customizability. We have a good rule of thumb: if you plan on utilizing more than three switches to control your lights, then you probably need a power distribution system such as sPOD. Let's take a look at what an sPOD is and whether or not it makes sense for your project. Centralized Control: sPOD offers a centralized means of managing and controlling auxiliary 12V electrical components on off-road vehicles, providing a single point of control for all your accessories.Solid-State Technology: Both the BantamX and SourceLT units utilize a solid-state board, providing a continuous power flow of up to 100 amps, and featuring up to eight circuits in total, rated at 30 amps each. Customizability: The Touch Panel allows for a wide variety of customization, including linking up to four BantamX units for a total of 36 switches controlled by one panel. Safety Features: The sPOD system includes a variety of safety features that help to protect against electrical faults, such as a low-voltage cutoff feature that prevents damage to the battery by shutting off the electrical components. Warranty: sPOD backs up their products with a 5-year manufacturer defect warranty, giving customers peace of mind knowing they're purchasing a reliable product. What is sPOD? An sPOD power distribution switch system is an advanced electronic control unit that offers a centralized means of managing and controlling auxiliary 12V electrical components on off-road vehicles. It consists of two main components: the switch panel and the solid-state unit. All you do is wire your positive and negative wire to the unit, and it is just one Ethernet cable going through the cab to the switch controller - it is really that simple. But we also believe in the product, so much so that we back it up with a 5-year manufacturer defect warranty. sPOD offers two powerful and space-saving switch panel power systems: the BantamX, an eight-circuit system, and the six-circuit system SourceLT. These solid-state technology units provide a continuous power flow of up to 100 amps and feature up to eight circuits in total, rated at 30 amps each. This flexibility allows customers to easily power a broad range of 12-volt accessories and not have to worry about any relays or fuses for each circuit; both systems utilize a solid-state board and one main fuse. The BantamX comes standard with the TouchHD, which gives that tactile feedback many people are so fond of. But for those looking to really customize their setup at the touch of their fingertips, we recommend the Touch Panel, which allows for a wide variety of customization and even linking up to four BantamX units for a total of 36 switches controlled by one panel. The sPOD engineers wanted to ensure our customers had full control of their system by integrating a splitter on the BantamX, allowing two switch panels to link together on one unit, so you can have a switch panel in the back of a camper and in the cab of a truck.   Both the sPOD BantamX and SourceLT units come equipped with built-in Bluetooth technology, giving customers the freedom to program and control their system from any wireless device. With a wide range of programming options available, including output dimming, strobing, flashing, master-slave functions, memory, auto power-up, momentary settings, input, and more that can be controlled through the app as well. Additionally, the units’ RGB technology allows for a broad spectrum of backlighting colors to match any unique style and preferences. When is the right time to upgrade? Before you can consider upgrading your power management system, you must consider the application you'll be using it for. If you are only running two light switches hooked up to your A-Pillar or your dust lights, we think that setup is just fine. But if you are looking to hook up three or more lights to add to it in the future, it is a no-brainer solution. Not only does it clean up your wiring, but the ease of installation makes it perfect - no splicing into a harness or adding in any type of complicated power tray and spending hours on a forum trying to learn how to set it up. Without having to fish multiple harnesses, the sPOD has a single cable going to the switch panel. More Than Just Lighting In addition to lighting, the sPOD system can also control winches and air compressors, although it cannot handle the circuit load as the amps typically pull 50-70 amps. With the use of the harnesses, you can tie in the switch lead and run the switch controller of the winch or air compressor. We see many people use an sPOD as a switch controller for both winches, air compressors, and lockers. Safety in Mind The sPOD system includes a variety of safety features that help to protect against electrical faults, such as a low-voltage cutoff feature that prevents damage to the battery by shutting off the electrical components. If the battery drops below 11.6V, after two minutes, the Bantam will shut down. So when you are at camp and accidentally leave your lights on, you won't have to worry about your car being unable to start because your lights drained your battery.  While it may seem like an extra step to add a switch system to your off-road vehicle, the benefits of simplicity and customizability cannot be overlooked. If you plan on utilizing more than three switches, a power distribution system like sPOD is an excellent choice. With its advanced electronic control unit, such as the BantamX and SourceLT, sPOD offers a centralized means of managing and controlling auxiliary 12V electrical components, including lighting, winches, and air compressors. With its solid-state technology and up to eight circuits, sPOD provides the flexibility to power a broad range of accessories and makes it easy to install and customize your system.
